Comparing Polytron’s New 500-Watt AC/DC Power Supplies: Package and Integration Considerations

When you need industrial AC/DC power supplies, the Polytron Devices division of Daburn Electronics has you covered with many rugged and versatile products to suit various power levels and application requirements. We recently added two rugged, 500-watt output AC/DC power supply families to our lineup — the RENUI500 and RONUI500, each boasting up to 93 percent efficiency, exceptional energy savings and minimal waste. This blog post will compare the two models, with emphasis on their construction, integrated peripherals and suitable applications.

Built with reliability in mind, these industrial power supplies come with a full range of protective features, and their 85 to 264 V AC and adjustable output voltages offer machine designers exceptional flexibility. Here are some of the factors to consider when choosing the ideal unit for your application.

Package. The RENUI500 comes in an enclosed, brick-type package — with a pin terminal — that protects the unit from harsh conditions often found in industrial environments. Brick packages efficiently dissipate heat and can mount directly to a printed circuit board for easy installation in tight spaces.

RONUI500 power supplies come in either an enclosed case or open-frame types with connector terminal. The plastic enclosure protects against electrical shock as well as from dust, dirt and moisture. It also acts as a shield against EMI. The open frame option is particularly suitable where equipment runs continuously thanks to its natural convection cooling. Without an outer casing, the power supply is lighter weight and easy to integrate.

Integrated peripherals. Many times, a basic AC/DC power supply such as the RENUI500 fits the bill. This approach makes it easy to, for example, efficiently match the design's power characteristics to the load requirements. Designers also have greater freedom to customize or scale their power circuit and develop it fast.

AC/DC power supplies that integrate essential peripheral components enhance functionality and efficiency, protect the unit and nearby devices while also being easy to implement. For example, the RONUI500 comes with a built-in power supply unit (PSU) to convert AC mains power to low-voltage DC required for C-Bus network components, making it well suited for home and building automation systems. It also includes an EMI filter to suppress differential and common-mode noise. And, while both power supplies feature comprehensive built-in safeguards, the RONUI500 integrates a fuse for extra protection against overcurrents and short circuits.

Additional Features and Applications

RENUI500 and RONUI500 AC/DC power supplies also feature:

  • 3,000V AC reinforced insulation
  • No minimum load required
  • Power Good signal
  • Remote ON/OFF
  • Current share function
  • Low standby power
  • Overcurrent, over temperature, overvoltage and short circuit protection
  • 5,000m operating altitude
  • OVC III

Both power supply families are appropriate for a wide range of applications such as 5G communications, energy storage systems (ESS), defense, robotics and factory automation.

Streamline Your Design and Boost Productivity

Polytron Devices RENUI500 and RONUI500 AC/DC power supplies offer a host of benefits and provide a good foundation for many industrial designs. And, with the RONUI500, you can sidestep the extra steps of adding peripheral components and electronics that can otherwise add time and complexity to the job. The RONUI500 is particularly attractive when streamlining designs, and it allows you to get equipment up and running quickly, boosting productivity.
