Efficient, Versatile and Reliable AC/DC Power Supplies Suit a Variety of Demanding Applications
As demanding sectors such as automated factories, defense and communications evolve through innovative devices requiring multi-Gbps data transfer rates to ramp up productivity, the need for more advanced power supplies has never been greater. Not only must industrial AC/DC power supplies meet many ambitious goals, they must stand up to harsh environments, fit into constantly shrinking spaces and be easy to use. This blog post will describe some of the important criteria to consider when choosing an AC/DC power supply for demanding 5G, industrial or defense applications, along with the features to look for, using a Polytron Devices 500-watt solution as an example.
AC/DC Power Supply Considerations for Industrial Applications
There are a number of factors to consider when selecting an AC/DC power supply, including:
- Versatility. When converting AC mains power to DC power, such as in 5G equipment, it's critical to have a power supply with a wide input range to give it the versatility to manage voltage variations. Additionally, current sharing allows for multiple power supplies to be connected if required.
- Energy efficiency. Large volumes of data in 5G and automated systems, for example, mean greater energy use. An ideal power supply will keep energy losses and heat to a minimum.
- Reliability. Because many communications, defense or industrial installations are in harsh, outdoor locations that may be difficult for repair personnel to access, be sure to select a power supply that both stands up to harsh conditions and includes robust safeguards to ensure continuous operation.
- Integrated peripheral devices. AC/DC power supplies that integrate essential peripheral devices enhance functionality and efficiency, protect the unit and nearby devices while also being easy to implement.
- Small form factor. Power supplies for 5G, defense and factory automation are often deployed in space-constrained installations that require a compact unit.
- Standards compliance. 5G power supplies, for example, should comply with IEC/EN/UL62368-1 safety standards as well as meet EN61000-3-2 harmonic correction requirements.
Efficient, Reliable Power Supplies for 5G Systems
One such example of an AC/DC power supply that is particularly desirable for demanding applications is the RONUI500 from the Polytron Devices division of Daburn Electronics. This 4.6 x 2.4 x 0.5-inch supply — available with an open frame or closed-frame to keep out dust and moisture — features up to 93% efficiency, accepts an 85 to 264V AC universal input range and delivers up to 500 watts of power via a current sharing function with multiple modules arranged in parallel for expandability. Peripheral circuits such as EMC filters, start-up current limiters and high-capacity capacitors offer important protections and streamline designs.
The RONUI500 can operate at full load up to 40°C thanks to conduction cooling on the system chassis. Its 5,000-meter operating altitude makes it suitable for many high-elevation installations. The OVC III RONUI500 was tested in accordance with various conditions within EMC standards such as EN61000, and it meets IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 safety approvals. Built-in safeguards include overcurrent, short circuit, overvoltage and overtemperature protections. Additional applications include industrial printers, energy storage systems (ESS) and robotics.
Select Power Supplies Built for High Performance And Reliability
When high performance and zero downtime are on the line in rugged applications, not all AC/DC power supplies are up to the task. Be sure to look for an efficient, power-dense unit designed for challenging operating conditions that also has built-in peripherals and safeguards to ensure reliability, such as the Polytron Devices RONUI500.
